Santiago feels his age, He is laughed at by the other fishermen, the younger ones who now use motors. Santiago wants one more shot at redemption. He wants to get a great fish to remember the greatness he once felt in his youth: Santiago wants show people, just one more time, what a fine fisherman he is. By the end of his ordeal, he does catch the great Marlin but the sharks eat it on his return journey, he is left with the carcass.
