How did the old man think of humility?

The old man was humble in his relationship with Manolin, whereas, he was prideful in his desire to catch the big fish. He humbled himself before the fish, but he had every intention of hooking it. Humility had nothing to do with his respect for the fish, and pride had everything to do with bringing it in.
Manolin was a different story. He is a true friend.... his help came from the heart.... it came from love. The Old Man wouldn't have accepted Manolin's help and solicitation had he believed it was born of pity.
