Do you think Santiago prefers fishing alone? Why/why not?

Santiago prefers the old way of fishing. He enjoys the solitude but I think he prefers fishing with young Manolin. Santiago likes the reverence that Manolin gives him. He also likes teaching Manolin and talking to him.
