What do you think is the symbolic meaning of the Greek gods and godesses?

I think the Ancient Greeks saw their Gods and Goddesses as both literal and symbolic. Certainly a God like Zeus, for example, was literally the God of the sky and weather, thunder, lightning...were both literal and metaphorical symbols of him.
