Odysseus travels to the underworld in order to speak with Tiresius. Upon meeting him, Tiresius offers the following advice: Odysseus must bring an oar inland and plant it as a sacrifice to Poseidon when a townsperson asks him about it. Apparently this sacrifice will bring him death when he is "full of years and peace of mind."
