The umbrella in the Fernando Sorrentino story, “There's a Man in the Habit of Hitting Me on the Head with an Umbrella,” can be seen as a(n)

The act of hitting the man with the umbrella can be seen as a metaphor for the little annoyances we face on an everyday basis, and the fact that we cannot allow those annoyances to control our lives. This is, of course, my opinion.
