The Odyssey

It is a qutoe on page 19 I have a question on.

When the author writes "Ulysseus kept the helm, grim, & unsmiling for he have seen painted on the wall of his sleep was meant to come true & that he was sailing straight into a nightmare." What does he mean?

Ulysses has had certain dreams that he regards as premonitions and they are pretty dark.
