How does the Cyclops speech to the ram add suspense ?

Odysseus is hanging under the belly of the ram. The longer he hangs there as the Cyclops speaks to the ram, the more likely it is that he could be discovered which would derail his entire plan of escaping from the Cyclops' cave.
