Homer uses specific traits in defining what it means to be a hero. Odysseus is portrayed as strong, courageous, noble, glory seeking, and confident. He is also authoritative and most importantly very intelligent. Quick thinking, he is usually able to escape testy situations and problem solve himself out of some very interesting moments (think the Cyclops' cave). Homer also portrays Odysseus as having aticulate speaking skills and the ability to manipulate others with his power of speech.
