I think the theme of wanting more than you have is relevant today. Mathilde was not satisfied with her middle-class life, longing for glamour and riches. She felt even the illusion of this life would make her happy. Most people in the Western world live beyond their means. Many people believe a fancy car, or a beautiful house will make them look wealthy and this will bring happiness. Unfortunately, like in the story, happiness through riches is only an illusion.
