Matilda paid a very high price for borrowing and losing the necklace. Replacing the necklace cost Mathilde and her husband thirty-six thousand francs. It also cost them cost them hard labor for the next ten years in order to pay off the loans.

They were allowed to have it for thirty-six thousand.

At the end of ten years everything was paid off, everything, the usurer's charges and the accumulation of
superimposed interest.
