Mathilde is described as having a love for "things." She loves glamour, nice clothes, the party life................ but most of all............ whatever she has, she wants it to be expensive. "Money" translates into pretty things, excitement, and glamour. Unfortunately, her husband isn't wealthy and nothing he ever gives her is good enough.
