In my opinion, Mathilde made the decision to keep the secret about the necklace. Her husband, on the other hand, is so busy trying to make her happy that he completely ignores the possibility of using good sense. The proper course would have been to admit upfront that the necklace had been lost... to simply go to Madame Forestier, who is supposed to be Mathilde's old "friend"and tell her the necklace was misplaced and to offer to pay for it over time. In doing this, their lives would have been far different. Madame Forestier might have been upset with Mathilde for being careless, but she also would have been able to tell them not to worry about it.... it was a fake anyway. Instead, Mathilde, who was too prideful to admit to an acccident, worked herself and her husband to the bone to pay off something that was worthless.
