Central idea of the theme

Love is not a theme in the short story The Necklace. Marriage, however, is one of the story's themes and is illustrated through Mathilde's belief that she "settled". Her marriage was not based on love, and it was not a marriage that would afford her the luxuries she believed herself entitled to.
