The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a novel written by Richard Flanagan and was published on 23 September 2013.
The novel details the life of war hero and doctor, Dorrigo Evans, who embarks in affair with his uncle’s wife. The guilt of this affair cripples him and makes his growing celebrity status difficult to handle.
The title of the book was taken from poet Matsuo Bashō's famous haibun, Oku no Hosomichi,[4] which is translated in English as The Narrow Road to the Deep North. Flanagan has stated that the book was inspired by his own father’s experience as a Japanese prisoner of war. The book has been critically acclaimed and has also won the 2014 Man Booker Prize.
