To begin with Zaroff is a pretty flat and almost comic character. THe guy lives alone on an island, except for Ivan who is deaf and dumb, and hunts people all night for a hobby. Having said this, Zaroff believes that the world must run under the "survival of the fittest" analogy. He has a few delusions of grandeur but basically feels that he, being strong, has dominion over the weak. He has kind of an alpha-male complex going here.
