Why does Rainsford deny the existence of feelings in the animals he hunts?

Rainsford denies their feelings because unlike Zaroff he doesn't want the animals to feel frightened...... he doesn't understand the fact that the animals do have feelings in addition to instinct until he himself is hunted. Example: the jaguar in panic.
