He is a macho big game hunter. Sensitivities to here things are considered weak. He is a tough sport hunter.

Rainsford denies their feelings because unlike Zaroff he doesn't want the animals to feel frightened...... he doesn't understand the fact that the animals do have feelings in addition to instinct until he himself is hunted. Example: the jaguar in panic
