Why did Rainsford kill General Zaroff?
Why did Rainsford kill General Zaroff? Were there any alternatives to killing Zaroff? What was going through Rainsford's head?

To put it simply, Rainsford killed Zaroff in order to both end and win the game. We do not know what was going through Rainsford's head, but we can infer he was thinking it had come down to kill or be killed.
