Okay, I should explain. All these characters are rather comical. They are flat characters who really are so preposterous that you can't help but laugh. Still, if I were say twelve years old, I'd pick Ivan. He has that monster/henchman like quality to him. He does not say much but he is big and scary looking.
Zaroff is the more "frightening" in the sense that his darkness/ugliness was on the inside whereas Ivan (if I remember correctly) derived his intimidating presence mostly from his physical characteristics.
To put it another way, who's more frightening: Hitler or one of his Nazi soldiers?
