Who are Rainsford and Whitney?

Rainsford and Whitney are two men traveling to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on a yacht to hunt. Rainsford is the story's protagonist. Whitney only appears in the opening scene when the two men discuss the ability of an animal to understand a hunt.
