What role does the island play in the story?

Zaroff basically traps ships using his lighthouse so they hit the rocks near his island. He traps the ships this way and then uses the crew to hunt. The island represents a mysterious place outside the confines and rules of civilization. It symbolizes uncharted territory where the laws of society do not apply.
