Rainsford is a protagonist that limited to escape fiction. If we can suspend our disbelief in the bizarre plot of the story and see Rainsford for what he is, then he's kind of enjoyable. He is the "perfect" male protagonist. He is strong, handsome, smart...One of my favourite parts of the story is how long it takes Rainsford to clue in that Zaroff hunts people.
