What is ominous about the name of the island

The island is called "ship Trap Island" which pretty much speaks for itself. The sailors are nervous to pass the island which gives it an ominous feeling,

"The old charts call it `Ship-Trap Island,"' Whitney replied." A

suggestive name, isn't it? Sailors have a curious dread of the place. I
