The author really lays on the figurative language thick to give the reader a the tone and mood of an escape type adventure story. Consider both the personification and the alliteration in the third sentence of the text.

trying to peer through the dank tropical night that was palpable as it pressed its thick warm blackness in upon the yacht.

The language is certainly over the top but in keeping with this genre of fiction.
