The Most Dangerous Game

In the end, Rainsford escapes Zaroff by jumping from the cliff. He didn't plan to jump, there was no forethought. He simply followed his instinct.... if he hadn't jumped he would have lost to Zaroff. So he took a chance that he wouldn't die on the rocks and jumped. After he survives the jump, Rainsford climbs the cliff and plans his appearance in Zaroff's room. Thus, both instinct and reason apply.
