No, I do not believe that Connell is condemning the sport of hunting. I believe his intent is to challenge his readers to re-evaluate their values, to encourage us to look at things from a wider perspective. Many people wear blinders in regard to their beliefs, values, and sense of morality....... and we often fail to consider the perspective of others...... Rainsford had very distinct beliefs about hunting and presumed to understand the animals he hunted. During the course of his time on the island, he came to understand that perspective.
