What is the situational irony occurs at the end of A Mystery of Heroism?

Collins risked his life for the water he never had the chance to consume, and he shared his water with a wounded man. Ironically, though the water no doubt gave some respite to the wounded man.... he died anyway, and Collins..... he risked his life to gain nothing.
