I know that the American Civil War was Bierce's inspiration for many of his short stories. Bierce enlisted in the Union Army's 9th Indiana Infantry Regiment. He witnessed some terrifying experience at the Battle of Shiloh (April 1862). Unfortunately I do not know enough about his particular war experiences which directly inspired incidents in his stories.
