The mystery of heroism addresses exactly what defines a hero or a heroic act. Often, these traits are a mystery. Collins, like the other in his regiment, hasn't ever been in the middle of a harsh battle. His regiment has been surrounded by war but hasn't yet taken part in the war. The men are full of jokes and nonsensical talk, and when Collins decides he wants a drink of water badly enough to cross the battle lines..... they think he's carzy. When he begins the trek.... he thinks he crazy. None-the-less, the journey for a drink of water provides suspense, good deeds, and in the end, a loss of life. We never learn what the true "mystery" is because Crane doesn't believe in it.
