There are a number of examples of foreshadowing in the story. While playing chess with his son,

Mr. White...having seen a fatal mistake after it was too late, was amiably desirous of preventing his son from seeing it [his move].

This foreshadows the Mr. White making the fatal decision of using the Monkey's paw that will prove to be the undoing of his son.
