In the Monkey's Paw think about the way, the author uses silence to create the mood for the story as the two older people are lying in bed waiting for the second wish to come true.  Why is this an effective writing strategy?

In doing this, the author draws the reader into the action.... the silence and anticipation is catchy.... filled with suspense, something that keeps us reading.
