Herbert's death directly relates to the theme of interfering with fate. Even after being warned, Mr. White made his wish.... and his son lost his life in order for that to come true. Note, this also correlates with the theme of superstition..... Herbert's death was an accident, who's to say it wouldn't have happened anyway.
