If we believe the moral of this story, then people who try to change their fate are always sorry. The old fakir puts the curse on the Monkey's Paw just to show that people will be sorry if they try to change their circumstances. Whether or not this is true for modern people depends on how modern man views the concept of free will which can, in fact, be a way to change fate.
