Architecture

Much of the novel takes place in and around churches with gothic architecture. The prevalence of these structures speaks to the theme of religious hypocrisy in the novel, but also draw on the conflict between appearance and substance. Churches are magnificent buildings, but this beautiful outside might conceal terrible hypocrisy and cruelty.
