Why is Gregor allowed certain new privileges at the outset of Chapter III?

Gregor is allowed certain new privileges at the outset of Chapter Three because his father takes pity on him. Gregor's physical condition has deteriorated, he can't climb the walls, in fact, he can barely move. Thus, his father thinks they should leave his door open and allow him to be a part of the family.... to allow him to watch them.
