The family invite three boarders to their place to raise extra money. I suppose the borders represent the orthodox outside world who are clearly not ready for the chaos and clutter of the Samsa home. They are eventually scared away by Gregor. The borders represent a sense of otherness unable and unwilling to accept Gregor.
