There are quite a few arguments. Gregor felt a sense of pride being able to once provide for his family. The flip side to pride is guilt for not being able to provide for the family. Gregor's identity is caught between pride and guilt depending on his ability to bring money into the house. This is one of the driving factors in Gregor's existential angst.
