what is Gregor's job ?

Gregor is a worker, a salesman. But the details of his job are less important than the idea that it is a tireless and thankless position that nevertheless consumes his thoughts and passions. Kafka is painting a picture of modern detachment, where we toil ceaselessly, giving ourselves over to empty routines unaware that they are swallowing our spirits. In effect, he is already a cockroach before the story begins because of his work.
