What does the change in relationship with gregor tell you about Gregor's mom? Significance?

This tells us that even what is considered to be the strongest bond of all, mother and child, can be broken because of aesthetic changes. Did Gregor cease to be her son once he turned into a bug? Perhaps Kafka is saying that even a mother's love is conditional.
