What does monstrous vermin or bug symbolize?

Many critics question if Gregor is actually a bug or is he just alienated from the world? Could the bug just be a metaphor for how he feels? Some critics think the bug is a Christ Figure of sorts: misunderstood, mocked, and killed for the sins of the family. It just depends how you wish to interpret the story.
