Gregor looks so hideous and as time goes on he smells bad as well. He is alienated from his family because he cannot communicate well; he gets worse as time goes on. His appearance is such that he gets in the way, and now that he has lost his job, they want nothing to do with him because he gives them nothing.

Gregor served as a slave laborer both at work and home. His existence wasn't much different after the metamorphosis than it was before. He lived an insect like existence even before he became a bug; he'd come home and retreat to his room; he was oppressed both at home and at work. Thus, you can see that his role (class) alienates him before and after his metamorphosis. He changes physically not mentally.
