Metaphorically, what does it mean to be a bug?

I viewed it as a sense of isolation from Gregor's family and, by extension, an existential isolation from humanity. Gregor has nothing important to give society. Making money for his family was his only purpose. Once that is gone the world seems to leave him behind or literally kill him like a bug.
