The fact that Gregor Samsa can no longer do anything at his normal speed provides a distinct contrast between what he cannot accomplish and what he has accomplished in the past. The pace of the cockroach fits in with the pacing of the changes that are happening to Gregor; he is no longer a contributing member of the family and cannot keep pace with their everyday life. He simply is unable to "keep pace" and ultimately panics until they finally allow him to die so they can move on with their lives without him.
