How did you respond to the ending of the metamorphosis ? What other endings might the story have had ? Explain

I found the ending extremely sad.... no one should feel as if they have to disappear in order for the rest of their family to find happiness. A different story might have included the family (Mom, Dad, and Grete) becoming more human and apathetic. Thus, Gregor mat have had the opportunity to reverse his own metamorphosis.
