I completely understand your doubt as to his heroic qualities. Robin Hood was a rebel, but he represented the downtrodden. The poor he fought and stole for made him a hero; he gained legendary status. Don't get me wrong, he stands and fights for the right side, but two wrongs never make a right. He was charismatic, brave, skilled, and he had a great heart. None-the-less, he was for all intents and purposes a thief; he just reversed the thievery.
