Why was Thomas surprised they were going into the Maze? What unusual site did they witness?

Thomas was surpirised they were going into the maze because he believed the change in the sky would change their routine, but it didn't. After entering the maze, Thomas and Minho see a Griever.... just sitting there unmoving. When they look again, it's gone.
