Why was Thomas in awe of the doors closing? Why were the doors being closed each night?

Thomas was awed by the size of the doors and their ability to close. He'd pictured a small door or entryway, but he hadn't envisioned moving walls. Thomas found the thought of the walls (doors) trapping him inside terrifying.
