Why does Thomas feel so strongly about Gally?

Of all the boys in the maze, Gally is the most arrogant and mean spirited. He immediately takes a disliking to Thomas and bullies him relentlessly. Gally claims to have seen Thomas before the changing, and thus, arouses suspicion about Thomas among the other Gladers.
