What had changed in Ch.34? What did Thomas think change meant? Why?

The sky changes in Chapter Thirty-four. Thomas believes he's only awoken too early.... that the sun hasn't risen yet. He soon learns the sun has disappeared (impossible). Thomas soon realizes that their sky is artificial and manipulated.
